Rental Cars Used for Habitation, Storage in Japan

Car renters in Japan are using vehicles not for travel, but for personal reasons such as storage and sleeping, according to Newswire. According to experts, about one in eight renters are not driving in their rental car.

Studies are currently being conducted to determine why this is happening. 

Carsharing companies are filling this need, due to low costs, ease of booking, and abundance of vehicles. For instance, a 30 minute rental costs about $4.

"This practice can be written off as a natural reaction to the limited space in large Japanese cities, and the long hours business professionals spend in busy metros," the post says. "There is a need for places where overworked men and women can lay their head or eat their lunch. These already exist in Japan, where people can rent out napping pods by the minute."
