All-New 2014 Engines

It’s not just vehicles that are all-new for the 2014 model-year, there are several all-new fuel-efficient powerplants or powertrains, debuting as well.

For the 2014 model-year, Audi is now offering its all-new 3.0L TDI six-cylinder powerplant on the A6, A7, A8, and Q5. With the new engine, vehicles can travel more than 650 miles per tank. The EPA-estimated fuel economy for each vehicle is:  24 mpg city/38 mpg highway for the A6/A7; 24 mpg city/36 mpg highway for the A8; and 24 mpg city/31 mpg highway for the Q5. According to Audi, the engine lowers fuel consumption and reduces CO2 emissions compared to equivalent gasoline engines.

General Motors is offering an all-new Chevrolet Cruze 2.0L Clean Turbo Diesel engine with an EPA-estimated 46 mpg highway rating and a range of more than 700 miles per tank. In Cruze’s variable-swirl intake manifold, each cylinder has two separate intake ports, with one of them controlled by a valve. During variable swirl, each throttle valve varies how much it opens to create mixture-motion of air and fuel within each cylinder.

GM is now offering its EcoTec3 engine technology, which combines direct injection, variable valve timing, and active fuel management to enable 2WD Chevrolet Silverados and Sierras to achieve 17 mpg city. EPA highway estimates are 22 mpg for 4x4 versions, and 24 mpg for 2WD models.

The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra will now be offered with the all-new 5.3L EcoTec3 V-8. This powerplant has an EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of up to 23 mpg and better than the 22 estimated highway mpg for the Ford EcoBoost turbo V-6.

Available this fall, the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 GMC Sierra 6.2L EcoTec3 V-8 will be the most powerful engine offered on any light-duty pickup, according to GM, with an estimated 420 hp and 450 lb.-ft. of torque, and a maximum available towing rating of 12,000 pounds.

The variable intake valve actuation on the 2014 Malibu/2014 Impala EcoTec 2.5L enhances efficiency and helps lower emissions, while also enhancing low-rpm torque, for a greater feeling of power at lower speeds, according to GM. When the iVLC system operates in low-lift mode, the engine pumps only the air it needs to meet the driver’s demand. The system switches to high-lift mode at higher speeds or under heavy loads, providing the full output capability of the engine.

Finally, the 2014 Impala is now offered with the all-new EcoTec 2.4L engine with eAssist. The engine provides electrical assist in certain conditions to help save fuel. It is rated at 182 hp and helps achieve estimated highway mileage of 35 mpg. The 2.4L with eAssist will be available at the end of 2013.

For the 2014 model-year, Mazda introduces the SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine, which will be used in its 2014-MY Mazda6 vehicles for the first time. The engine features a new two-stage turbocharger for a smooth and linear response from low to high engine speeds, and greatly increases low- and high-end torque, according to Mazda. It also complies with global emissions regulations without NOx aftertreatment.

Volkswagen is offering an all-new 1.8L turbocharged, direct injection four-cylinder TSI engine on the Jetta, Beetle, and Passat models. This new engine will gradually replace the 2.5L five-cylinder naturally aspirated powerplant, according to the manufacturer. Allowing for a 12-percent increase in average fuel economy over the outgoing 2.5L, the TSI will be fitted to the MY-14 Jetta and Passat model range, followed by the Beetle Coupe and Convertible in January 2014.
