Mentor by eDrivingSM is a patented*, closed-loop, driver behavior-based safety program that includes a smartphone-based app. Mentor provides transparency to help high-risk drivers understand their risk exposures, how those factors affect their safety, and what they can do to manage, control, and mitigate their risk of crashes, thereby improving their driving.

Using sensors in the smartphone, the Mentor app collects performance data on driving behaviors most predictive of crash risk, including speeding, cornering, hard braking, rapid acceleration, and phone distraction. Mentor not only identifies risky behavior, but also helps remediate it by providing engaging, interactive micro training modules delivered directly to the driver in the smartphone app. These modules are currently available in 14 languages.

Mentor’s powerful analytics engine evaluates drivers’ behavior after every trip and over time. As a result of eDriving’s partnership with the leading analytics software company, FICO, Mentor drivers receive an individual FICO® Safe Driving Score that has been shown to predict the likelihood of a driver being involved in a crash or incident. eDriving and FICO’s validation project using data from the 2nd Strategic Highway Research Program, a large-scale, naturalistic driving study with over 3,500 participants and nearly 32 million miles of driving data,** confirmed that drivers with low FICO® Safe Driving Scores have a higher crash involvement rate than drivers with high scores.

One of the ways Mentor promotes engagement and accountability in order to change behavior is by incorporating successful elements of gamification. Its Circles feature fosters friendly competition by allowing drivers to set up private groups and invite co-workers to join their Circles and share their scores. Using emojis and/or chat messaging in the app, Circle members can encourage each other or brag about their improvement. Circles also provides informal opportunities for managers to remain connected with their drivers as they work together to remain collision-, license violation- and injury-free.

The broader Mentor program provides organizations with additional tools and support to help drivers change risky habits and improve their FICO® Safe Driving Scores, preventing many of the predicted crashes from happening. It starts by providing resources to help organizations establish safety as a corporate priority and facilitate a successful launch of Mentor to drivers and managers. The program combines the FICO® Safe Driving Score with data from multiple sources to create a comprehensive view of driver risk.

These data sources include eDriving’s predictive, validated risk assessment, motor vehicle record (MVR) point-in-time checks, ongoing license monitoring, and collision and incident data. This holistic picture of organizational risk allows managers to identify their riskiest drivers and prescribe appropriate training and coaching. In addition to engaging micro training, Mentor also provides tools to facilitate effective manager-driver coaching sessions. The Mentor program also provides a robust dashboard for monitoring engagement and improvement, and supplies managers with monthly, quarterly and annual analytics in addition to industry benchmarks.

Changing behavior is hard, as anyone knows who has attempted to modify their diet or exercise routine.  But Mentor helps drivers make key changes in risky habits by:

  • Encouraging, measuring and rewarding small incremental steps forward;
  • "Weighing” results after each drive and over time, and encouraging drivers to replace risky habits with safe habits permanently;
  • Inspiring personal engagement and accountability, and
  • Providing ongoing coaching to address personal driving challenges.

eDrivingSM helps organizations worldwide ensure that everyone who drives for work purposes returns home safely at the end of the day. eDriving has been helping its clients create crash-free cultures® and reduce collisions, injuries, license violations and Total Cost of Ownership for over two decades. eDriving’s Virtual Risk Manager® (VRM) offering launched the original patented, closed-loop risk reduction methodology, proven to reduce collisions by up to 67% and deliver ROI of 20-40%. Combined with eDriving’s outstanding customer support, data security, privacy protection and unmatched risk management expertise, such proven results are the reason eDriving is the global risk management partner of many of the world’s largest and safest fleets.
