The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has upgraded the 2019 Hyundai Tucson to a Top Safety Pick+ for 2019, when the compact SUV is equipped with certain crash prevention features and headlights.

Specifically, the new recognition applies to Tucsons built after March 2018 and equipped with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist and LED headlights.

Earlier 2019 models of the vehicle maintain their 2019 Top Safety Pick status.

To earn the upgrade, the latest 2019 Hyundai Tucsons were put through the paces, earning good ratings in six rigorous tests. These included the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint tests.

In addition, the car's front crash prevention system and LED headlights met the stringent criteria the Institute demands.

Finally, according to the automaker, the new standard Hyundai SmartSense safety technologies on the Tucson bring an additional level of protection to drivers and passengers. These include High Beam Assist, Rain-sensing wipers, Surround View Monitor, and Smart Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go.

Hyundai now offers motorists 11 vehicles that have captured either the Institute's Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ status when equipped with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights.
