Commercial vehicle sales in South Africa saw growth in July, offsetting the overall trend of new vehicle sales declining in the region.

Despite the strength in the commercial vehicle segment, sales overall reflected a decline of 3.7%, according to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA).

There was growth in the light commercial vehicle segment, with 13,852 units sold in July, which was a 2.9% gain from the same month last year. Sales in the medium- and heavy-truck segments were also up in July, and saw increases of 14.9% and 21.4%, respectively.

Meanwhile, bolstering the overall decline in the market, new passenger car sales in July registered a decline of 2,617 cars or a fall of 8.2% to 29,477 units compared to the 32,094 new cars sold in July last year, according to NAAMSA.
