Lyft has officially entered the car rental market, launching Lyft Rental in San Francisco and Los Angeles, the company announced yesterday.

Now, select users in those cities will be able to rent vehicles through the Lyft app. All vehicles are equipped with Apple Carplay, Android Auto, and phone chargers. Renters opt for add-ons like ski racks, car seats, and tire chains for free.

Lyft said that it will be adding hybrid vehicles to the rental fleet in the near future.

"We’re building the future of transportation into one app to minimize the need for personal car ownership," Lyft officials said in a blog post.

Features:

  • Door-to-door service: Rentals receive a $20 credit (each way) to get them to and from the rental lot.
  • Unlimited mileage, and no mileage fees;
  • No need to refill the tank before returning — Lyft will refill and charge local market price.
  • Discount pricing Monday through Thursday.

Lyft tested the service with a soft launch in San Francisco, Oakland, and Los Angeles last year.

Following Lyft's announcement yesterday, shares of Hertz and Avis fell -4.8% and -4.4%, respectively.
