Mass. State Police Has GPS in 3K Vehicles

The Massachusetts State Police has activated automatic vehicle location (AVL) systems in nearly 3,000 cruisers, according to a state release.

Last year, the PD announced it would have more than 1,000 marked vehicles with AVL systems by May. However, these were implemented on vehicles’ built-in laptops rather than the vehicle itself, which MSP head Col. Christopher Mason said was a problem because they could be removed from the vehicles, WCVB reported. The hardware costs $255,000, and it will cost $50,000 a month to monitor the entire fleet.

In addition, the PD has also posted a request for responses for a contract to provide the department with 1,500 body cameras and 1,000 in-car video systems.
