The City of Arlington, Texas, in partnership with Via and May Mobility, has launched RAPID, a pilot program that will provide autonomous vehicle rides as part of the city's on-demand public transit network.
The goal of the Arlington RAPID pilot project is to provide a blueprint for combining on-demand rideshare and AV technology for safe and accessible public transit.
The acquisition brings together world class technology solutions to fully support the transportation community in multimodal planning, scheduling, and operating on-demand and fixed route transit, paratransit, and school buses.
The service was launched at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 to complement and extend Jersey City’s existing public transit infrastructure, specifically to fill the existing gaps in public transportation access in the North and South regions of the city.
More than 39,000 accounts have been created and more than 470,000 rides have been taken on Via Arlington since the service launched.
The partners will introduce their first service available to the public in Arlington, Texas, in partnership with the City of Arlington and University of Texas at Arlington.
The new service, called Pikmi, will provide shared rides in Altstetten and Albisrieden, and the Triemli and Hardplatz transport hubs.
The partnership’s service is expected to launch in one of Motional’s existing U.S. markets in 2021.
COTA//Plus Bus On-Demand transports multiple customers who hail a transit vehicle at the nearest transit stop through the COTA//Plus app.
