Since 2004, the Southern California Regional Transit Training Consortium has provided bus maintenance training throughout the region via partnerships with local colleges, universities, and transit agencies.
Each school is unique due to the size of the campuses, student bodies, and their locations within their local communities. But, virtually all of them have two key things in common: the layout of the routes and an “off season.”
Only a few years ago, these buses could only travel a few hours without needing another charge. Today, some are claiming 160 miles, roughly one-half the specified range of diesel-powered transit buses.
With a theme to be “100% Green in 2018,” the California-based agency recently awarded BYD a contract to supply up to 85 electric buses over a five-year period, with the first 29 set to be delivered over the next year.
Several manufacturers unveiled new vehicles, including ABC Companies and Micro Bird Commercial, as well as those new to the U.S. market by Karsan and Indbus. All told, 145 exhibitors, with more than 50 new to the annual event, packed the show floor.
Roaring Fork currently has four Gillig CNG buses with tank assemblies from Agility Fuel Systems, using Type III cylinders from Worthington-SCI, with delivery of the remaining 18 set to occur in July.
A new facility is scheduled to begin operations this spring, and the agency just received its first 30 Gillig CNG buses in February.
